The Moment of Insight: Startup of This Moment
in Focusing and Psychoanalysis

Abstract: Focusing, developed by Rogers in his old age and Gendlin, is to understand the Felt Sense of client’s shift from the view of phenomenology feeling. Corresponding to psychoanalysis process, the analyst and the client have the interaction and thus develop the analysis process and emotion insight. Focusing could supply the Felt Sense with practical significance for psychoanalysis. Analyst could have the feeling of the Felt Sense produced by the shift in the interaction of analyst and client, and gestate this sense, so as to maturely develop an interpretation language which is the counselor’s insight process. This Felt Sense, however, constructs the in-depth interpretive operability standard and phenomenology technology for psychoanalysis, and broadens the moment operability capability for psychoanalysis in operation.

Psychoanalysis and psychodynamic therapy (hereinafter referred to as psychoanalysis). It is important that clients got understanding through exploration and interpretation. But how and when does the treatment activate the kind of understanding? What is the standard of interpretation arousal? there are lots of answners , such as frequent participation of self-experience analysis, and many supervisions, then by virtue of subconscious treatment experience. However, these ways seem to be unsatisfactory. Because we face these problems in unconscious way. We find it is helpful to grasp the timing of interpretation arousal with the setting of psychoanalysis, when using the focusing-oriented experienced therapy from Gendlin with an open mind., of which we have got good understanding.

Rogers ,when at old age, did the research on the treatment progress and experience in Wisconsin with Gendlin, which developed the focusing-oriented psychotherapy. Focusing has contributed a lot to the discovery of felt-sense, which influenced the change of treatment. The so-called point of felt-sense is one kind of deep feeling vibration from the client’s body, which must be with the change reluted from any effective psychoanalysis. If this point does not occur, it’s expected the treatment moved on with the background of isolation, intellectualization and emotional progress. Focusing is first to help client to achieve development, which is good to the analyst himself as well . When faced with a problem or doubt, the focusing can help the psychoanalysist accept the guidance of body and develop more extended perception of treatment, which will help the therapist be able to grasp the key exploration and interpretation timing in analytical treatment.

The conversation between the therapist and the client came into a stage, when the therapist found that his chest feel a little bit depressed and the client ,Miss L talked about her unpleasant relation with her colleagues once again. The therapist rexperienced the depressed feelings , and asked the client’s feeling. Miss L talked about her painful feeling behind the depression, when both therapist and Miss L got a feeling of being misunderstood .The interpretation of the feeling made Miss L get immediately touched and wept, but felt relieved about the depression. In this case, the therapist made use of the felt-sense from focusing to help the client explore the isolated feeling . While many excellent psychoanalysts also grasped such feelings, but they did subconsciously or used countertransference. However, if got the focusing-oriented therapy training, the therapist would focus on his felt-sens and find problems consciously .The point of focusing felt-sense and the insight of relevant background is a Gestalt perception. In the perspective of intersubjective view of psychoanalysis, this change resulted from construction of interactions.

It’s easy for readers to think the case of Miss L is not hard, which is just the brief instructions on the focusing point. In the case of Mr. H, the readers will see more sophisticated use of focusing. During the period of treatment, he has always been talking about something boring, in which the therapist get the feeling inexplicable and they both do not know what happened. In some section, the therapist felt something inexplicable only in face of the client but not tired. So he focused on the current events and the relevant feeling ,which is slight on the chest and hard to describe. When focused on the feelings counsciouly, a word came out from the feelings slowly, "boring life." When the therapist continued to listen and feel the boring life, the inner word changed into “sentimental” suddenly .One scene emerged from the therapist’s free association ,in which Mr.H was washing dishes in a small restaurant abroad. The therapist had an internal vibration and expressed the sentimental feeling, when a natural starting point of interpretaion came out. Mr. H seemed to be influenced , and began to say he graduated inland but made his living only by washing dished in samll restarant duing to his language communication problem early abroad and then slowly got good achievement after a long time, when a vivid sentimental feeling about life emerged like a stream. After it, Mr.H moved forward.

Interpretation is the core content of psychoanalytic therapy. How to start the interpretation and when to give interpretation, and what is the standard of interpretation is worth deep considering. From the cases above, it may be found that the analysts experienced the vibration changes of body and mind before the valid interpretation. Those who give over-rational interpretation or use the stereotyped terms can’t get the felt-sense, because the theoretical interpretation has no effect on clients and no resonance or change happened . The best result is to enhance the defense of clients. The use of focusing can help find the appropriate starting point of interpretation, but not unreasonable, blind or experienced. If the analyst develops their ability to focusing on felt-sense, he can do better in helping clients and starting proper psychoanalytic interpretation , as well as confrontation, empathy and clarification techniques. When the analyst felt the obstacles of analysis and interprtation ,the use of focusing can help to carry forward the whole psychoanalysis process right now.

when we talked about the focusing and its use in psychoanalysis, the focusing developed by Dr.Gendlin should come into the readers’eyes, which has six stages on the specific techniques, such as clearing a space, felt sense, handle, resonating, asking and receiving. In the present, focusing can be simplified to four techniques, namely the entry, contacts building and deepening and regression, which can provide the analysts with a good basic training, and help the client and himself get understanding of difficulties and confusion. The ways in focusing are kind of practical application of phenomenology.
Here is the brief introduction of the essence of four stages in focusing,."Come in," refers to the perception of the body and feeling and inviting something needed to be awared, waiting for something come naturally ; " contact building " is to start the description of the emerging felt-sense and to recognize and get to know the way to contact. "deepening contact" that is to be with the felt-sense , then feeling the body and the symbol ,getting the resonance with the experience and adjustment from different perspectives, building the real connection with their inner part; "come out" is about finding a place to stop and accept and experience what changed and let it know you're willing to come back and accept it. For readers ,you can learn more about the six stages in basic training through focusing workshops.
This article presents the integration of focusing from the modern development of the humanistic therapy in the frame of pschoanalysis. In the current attempt in practice, it is proved that the focusing is feasible and effective. However, this is only an initial attempt, we can see much space available to communicate and complement each other, which need many efforts from more clinical psychologists to explore and try.
